Those who know they have Buddha nature, you should teach the Dharm of Liberation.
Student asked:
Please explain to me the verse
"With feelings come the planting of the seed.
Because of the ground, the fruit is born again.
Without feelings, there is no seed at all.
Without that nature there is no birth either."
Teacher replied:
In these four sentences, the Fifth Patriarch Hoang Nhan taught the Sixth Patriarch Hui Neng as follows:
- With feelings come the planting of the seed: Those who know they have Buddha nature, also called Buddha seeds.
- Because of the ground, the fruit is born again: Meet good soil, Buddha seed - Buddha fruit is immediately born
- Without feeling there is no seed at all: Those who do not know they have Buddha nature.
- Without that nature there is no birth either: The Buddha nature does not open.
In these four sentences, the Fifth Patriarch Hoang Nhan aimed to teach the Sixth Patriarch Hui Neng as follows:
Those who know they have Buddha nature, you should teach the Dharma of Liberation. Those who do not know that they have Buddha nature, you should not teach them the Dharma of Liberation. If you try to teach them, it is like water off a duck’s back, there is no effect.
