Zen Buddhism requires no practice, so it does not accomplish anything. The purpose of practicing Zen Buddhism is to return to the old home land to become a Buddha.
Student asked:
Uncle, I used to read a book titled Paramita (to reach the other shore) of Great Master Thuong Hue Ha Nhat, who is a member of Northern Mendicant Sect and a late monk at Linh Quang pagoda in District 4. The book teaches how to recite the Buddha's name as follows:
Recite until your mind is not loving - not hating - not clean - not dirty - not born - not dead, your heart is pure and clear like space, covering and spreading to all living beings, like a Buddha. When reciting, one must listen to who is reciting the Buddha's name, clearly know where the sound of reciting the Buddha's name comes from, and then find and learn from a teacher who can clearly understand that seeing and hearing phenomena.
For more than 10 years, I have been silently looking for a teacher to help explain my practice.
Until I read your book, I understood that this way of reciting the Buddha's name is a practice to achieve a clear, pure, and natural Seeing nature, i.e to realize one's true Buddha nature and how to live with it. And, only returning to the Buddha Realm can one live with the Buddha nature without being born or dead, clean or dirty as described in the book by this Great Master. Is my understanding complete, Uncle?

This is the practicing method of the Northern Sect combined with Pure Land Buddhism.
If you practice this dharma method strictly you are certified the fruition of pure sainthood, also called sainthood practice.
On the contrary, Zen Buddhism requires no practice, so it does not accomplish anything. The purpose of practicing Zen Buddhism is to return to the old home land to become a Buddha. No longer be subjected to birth - old age - illness - death. That's all.
